Widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier training programs for emerging opera talent, Pittsburgh Opera’s Resident Artist Program attracts more than 800 applicants each year for just a handful of coveted spots.
Designed for singers and artists who have completed advanced studies, the program provides intensive professional training under the mentorship of world-class opera leaders and innovators. Resident Artists refine their vocal technique, repertoire, diction, languages, movement, and acting skills while performing in Pittsburgh Opera productions. The program also includes opportunities for a stage director and a pianist, underscoring its comprehensive approach to operatic training.
Alumni of the program frequently go on to perform on the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Metropolitan Opera. Recent success stories include Emily Richter (Resident Artist 2022–24), who was named one of just five Grand Finals Winners of the 2024 Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition.
The Resident Artist Program is made possible in part through the generosity of individual sponsors.
