PITTSBURGH SAVOYARDS PRESENT GILBERT & SULLIVAN’S ‘THE GRAND DUKE

The Pittsburgh Savoyards are bringing Gilbert & Sullivan’s rarely staged operetta The Grand Duke to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in Carnegie, with performances March 20-22 and 27-29.
Set in the fictional duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig, the story follows a troupe of actors who accidentally overthrow the government through a game of cards, only to discover that running a country is far more complicated than performing on stage. What follows is a delightfully absurd mix of mistaken identities, sudden romances, and bureaucratic chaos. Directed by Olivia Hartle, with music direction by Guy Russo, the production features a full 30-piece orchestra and showcases Gilbert & Sullivan’s signature blend of witty satire, lively melodies, and ensemble-driven comedy.

RESONANCE WORKS PRESENTS ‘REQUIEM FOR WATER

Resonance WorksRequiem for Water, a choral and orchestral program exploring humanity’s connection to the natural world and to one another, will feature the Pittsburgh premiere of “Malhaar: A Requiem for Water” by composer Reena Esmail. Written during California’s recent drought, the work blends the Latin Requiem with Hindustani musical traditions and poetry, reflecting on water as both a vital resource and shared human inheritance. Hindustani vocalist Vidita Kanniks makes her Resonance Works debut as a soloist, joined by the Resonance Works Festival Chorus, soprano Charlene Canty, tabla player Asish Sinha, and percussionist Abby Langhorst. Performances take place Friday, March 6, at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in Carnegie, and Sunday, March 8 at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh in Shadyside.

Chaos, comedy, and a fair amount of alcohol take center stage at the Greer Cabaret Theater March 12-15 for Shit-faced Shakespeare: Hamlet, the irreverent theatrical hit. In this raucous retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, one actor performs the role of the “Shit-faced” after imbibing generously before the show, while the rest of the cast attempts to keep the play on track.
