Thanksgiving Weekend in Pittsburgh Serves Up a Bounty of Theater!

Six shows open on Friday the 26th and an encore stream of Prime Stage’s KARLOFF The Man and the Monster is available now through the 28th.

Quantum Theater offers up their production of Chimerica, opening on Saturday 27th. Chimerica is a political thriller that takes a hard look at the role corruption and censorship play in China and America set against the background of the US 2012 election. City Theater presents An Untitled New Play By Justin Timberlake, opening on the 27th as well. An idealistic literary manager at a non-profit theater wants to change the world by discovering unsung writers and plays that matter. Still, her tone-deaf boss instead chooses a “pop superstar” to write the “hit” that will keep the theater from going out of business. The Pittsburgh Savoyards continue their 84th season with a Savoyard’s Studio Production of Joe Landry’s It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Brought to life by Director Sue Kurey, the production runs from November 26 – December 11 at the Pittsburgh Savoyards’ Headquarters, 523 Lincoln Ave, Bellevue, PA.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic holiday movie with a clever twist thrown in: the story is staged as a live radio broadcast. Actors portray numerous characters, and sound effects are done through Foley artists.

Little Lake Theatre closes this season with two holiday-themed productions Madeline’s Christmas A Musical with book and lyrics by Jennifer Kirkeby and music by Shirley Mier. Kathy Hawk directs with music direction by Holly Jones.

“In an old house in Paris, covered in vines, lived 12 little girls in two straight lines.” And with that familiar phrase, author and illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans sets in motion the adventures of the brave and resourceful Madeline! In this musical adaptation, Madeline’s schoolmates and tutor are all sick in bed on Christmas Eve, unable to go home for Christmas. Madeline comes to the rescue with the help of a magical rug merchant and takes her friends on a Christmas journey they will never forget.

Lastly, if you missed Prime Stage’s production of KARLOFF The Man and the Monster the show is now available to stream through November 28. David Nackman portrays Karloff.

Paying homage to the 90th anniversary of Old Hollywood’s Frankenstein, the play uncovers the mystique of Boris Karloff, a name now synonymous with Dr. Frankenstein’s monster.
