Pittsburgh CLO’s “The Twenty-Sided Tavern” Opens Next Week

It’s a World-Class World-Saving World Premiere guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

OK, perhaps a bit overhyped here, but the CLO’s first Kara Cabaret looks like a unique interactive experience worth checking out.

The Twenty-Sided Tavern is promoted as an epic quest where the audience joins a troupe of adventurers on the journey of a lifetime. In this interactive performance, you choose the characters, the paths they take, and the journey’s outcome, all from the comfort of your seat. The story changes every night and is a fantastic mixture of laugh-out-loud comedy and a thrilling, electrifying narrative.

Using your phone(the show calls it a Gamiotics device) and your boundless sense of adventure, you vote in elections and compete in minigames to influence the evening’s narrative. In a genuinely democratic process, you’ll use your input to dictate the party’s successes and failures at every step of the journey.

You are told the story, and then you immerse yourself in the fantasy world with you’ll supplying the decision-making.

Clearly a theatrical experience all about you!

The Important Notes, Disclaimers, and Legaleze: Charging stations will be available at the venue. But for a two-hour quest, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got about 15% battery power available. Gamiotics is browser-based software, so there’s nothing to download, and it’s easy to use. The producers say they won’t steal your data or track your info unless you really, really, really want them to.

The Twenty-Sided Tavern is functionally similar to D&D but legally distinct from any other tabletop roleplaying game.

You’ll only be called up onstage if you explicitly volunteer.

The experience varies every night based on the audience’s decisions and the way the dice roll. Plus, the outcome of the previous evening’s adventure will help build the world for the next night’s quest.

While the exact running time can differ, due to the improvisational nature of the experience, the average runtime is about two hours plus a brief intermission.

The Twenty-Sided Tavern is a show set in a tavern. Within these walls, you may encounter coarse language, adult themes, alcohol use, depictions of violence, jugglers, stunts that should not be imitated at home, pickpockets, loose women, loose men, loose non-binary folx, loose change, and fantasy creatures that may not be suitable for all adventurers. Audience discretion is advised.

The Twenty Sided Tavern opens Friday, April 15 at the CLO Cabaret! Buy tickets online, call 412-456-6666, or visit the Box Office at Theater Square. There is a second “M” rated late night performance on Saturday, April 23rd and 30th at 10pm.
