Peak Theater Week Two- What’s Opening This Week

Last week seven productions opened in the greater Pittsburgh area. (Scroll to the end to see this list.)

Not to be outdone- there are eight additional shows opening this week and a new streaming offering from Pittsburgh Opera. Here is a quick look:

Momentum ’22 New Play Festival | City Theatre | South Side Campus | May 16 to 21 To register visit CityTheatreCompany.org

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, City Theatre announces the return of the Momentum Festival of New Plays at Different Stages (Momentum ‘22). The festival features public readings of three new plays in progress as well as a playwright’s “open mic.” The festival overlaps the final week of the mainstage production, The Garbologist by Lindsay Joelle, a co-world premiere production that was developed at the Momentum Festival in 2019.

Ain’t Too Proud is the electrifying, new smash-hit Broadway musical that follows The Temptations’ extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their signature dance moves and silky-smooth harmonies, they rose to the top of the charts creating an amazing 42 Top Ten Hits with 14 reaching number one.

15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.  Recommended for ages 13+, contains strong language

A tender and timely story of family, friendship, and acceptance that teaches us that it really is a wonderful thing to “love who you love”, A Man of No Importance  combines the depth and drama of a play with the lyricism and comedy of a musical. A tender and beautifully woven tale of love, and friendship set in 1960s in Dublin, Ireland, and the winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, A Man of No Importance  is another successful collaboration by the team of Terrence McNally, Lynn Ahrens and Pittsburgh native Stephen Flaherty, all of whom won Tony Awards for Ragtime and Once on This Island.
