After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PFO returns to in-person performances, celebrating the legendary voices of today and tomorrow.
“After two and a half years of a pandemic, I am excited to present our summer festival in person!” says Marianne Cornetti, Pittsburgh Festival Opera’s Artistic Director. “For two weeks this summer we have an array of hugely talented young singers — you won’t want to miss a performance! This is the future of opera.”
International opera star and PFO Artistic Director Marianne Cornetti kicks off the festival with a solo concert. Legends in the Limelight: Marianne Cornetti will enthrall audiences July 1 at The New Hazlett Theater.
The 2022 Leslie Fleischner Young Artist Program showcases the best and the brightest of the next generation of opera stars. See them perform in two staged concerts on July 8 and 10 and in a special Divas After Dark Cabaret on July 2, all at The New Hazlett Theater.
Audiences are in for a rare treat with The Telephone, Gian Carlo Menotti‘s comic opera. The show is part of a double-header with a concert of arias and duets with Julia Laird, soprano finalist, and Bryan Murray, baritone winner of The Mildred Miller International Voice Competition. Catch the show on July 3 and 5 at The New Hazlett Theater.
Opera fans young and old should make sure to catch Rapunzel by composer Richard Brooks and librettist Harold Mason. This is a fabulous one-act opera in three scenes that brings the timeless, magical fairy tale of Rapunzel to life for audiences of all ages. Children who loved Tangled will appreciate its origin story, and parents, too! Don’t miss Rapunzel on July 9 at The New Hazlett Theater and July 11 at the Schenley Plaza Tent.
It was scandalous in 411 B.C.: A woman, Lysistrata, was so fed up with constant war that she convinced noblewomen to withhold sex to get their warrior husbands to stop fighting. The opera has been reimagined for today as a comic account of her extraordinary mission. The 2005 opera Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess, by Mark Adamo, was filmed in Pittsburgh last summer. It features members of the Leslie Fleischner Young Artists Program with Music Director Robert Frankenberry and is produced by Pittsburgh Festival Opera. Attend the film’s world premiere screening on July 12 at Row House Cinema.
Finally, close out the festival with an evening of arias under the stars at the Schenley Plaza Tent with Legends in the Making, once again featuring the talented singers of the 2022 Leslie Fleischner Young Artist Program.
