The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh Hosts Composer and Violinist Alyssa Wang

On February 4 and 5, 2023, the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh (COP) celebrates the remarkable talents of composer, violinist, and conductor Alyssa Wang in two performances: February 4, at 7:30 pm at Rodef Shalom and February 5, at 3:00 pm at Calvary United Methodist Church on the North Side.

For this program, COP has commissioning an original work from Wang, a violin concerto titled Swept Away, and this program will feature its world premiere performance with Wang as soloist. COP will also present Jozef Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, his “Mourning” Symphony, and Sinfonietta No. 1 by Malcolm Arnold.

Of her new composition, Wang says, “Swept Away represents the emotional journey that I experienced following the passing of my father, beginning with his death and ending with me returning to the world with this new reality. Rather than creating a musical portrait of him, I’m trying to evoke my own very specific emotions that reflect several components of grief: shock and anger, numbness, sadness just under the surface of everything.” As she considers her audience for the work, she continues, “This concerto is for anyone who has been affected by cancer, either themselves or someone they love. While it features dark moments and emotions that are painful to revisit, I hope that what they will take away are the moments of light and hope.”

Tickets are available online at for the February 4th concert at: https://copgh.ticketleap.com/swept-away/ and February 5th at  https://copgh.ticketleap.com/swept-away2/
