Classrooms Without Borders and Rodef Shalom Congregation present this one-person award-winning monodrama on February 12th.
Based on Benny Barbash‘s Israeli bestseller by the same name, the play has toured Israel and the globe to great acclaim and rave reviews for over 20 years. It tells the story of Yotam, an eleven-year-old child, who becomes obsessed with documenting his life after receiving a children’s tape recorder, his “first Sony.” Yotam records events involving his family, and we hear their voices, struggles, and heartbreak. He presents his findings with naive honesty and humor, which help to soften the painful coming-of-age played so expertly.

Roy Horovitz is a familiar figure on Israeli stages, having worked with such renowned companies as the Habimah National Theatre and the Beer Sheva Theatre. He has appeared in Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Denver, but American audiences are likelier to have seen him in the 2001 film The Body, starring Antonio Banderas. Horovitz is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv. His courses include the current Israeli theater scene, the preoccupation of Israeli playwrights with the Holocaust, and the modern interpretation of the Bible on the stage.
Tsipy Gur, Founder & Executive Director of Classrooms Without Borders, said she is excited to present a free program for the community. “When we bring scholars and experts to Pittsburgh, we usually focus on in-school programs and finding opportunities for educators to learn with their students in an experiential learning setting. But Roy’s talent needs to be seen by the entire Pittsburgh community, as he takes us on a journey about families and relationships that everyone can relate to.”
The partnership with Rodef Shalom is a natural one, as Classrooms Without Borders is housed in the synagogue’s historic building. “We are so pleased to be able to host this production with CWB,” said Barb Feige, Executive Director of Rodef Shalom Congregation. “Theater has long been a form of expression and teaching; this performance is both thought-provoking and moving.”
The program will be in Levy Hall at Rodef Shalom, 4905 Fifth Avenue, at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 12th. The event includes an hour-long performance (in English) and a Q&A session, followed by a reception. The event is free with a suggested $10 donation, and reserved seating is available for a $25 donation. Reservations can be made via the Classrooms Without Borders website.
