Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Visually Stunning ‘Dracula’

By MAC Hoover

The well-dressed crowd at the Benedum was buzzing with anticipation on opening night as they were waiting for this production to start. PBT’s Dracula did not disappoint.

“We have tried to tell the story of the book and be honest with it.”
 Choreographer Michael Pink

Director / Choreographer Michael Pink opens his Dracula with a scene of a nightmare; however, this production, aided by the dramatic score by British composer and pianist Philip Feeney, was a dream to watch

Although I was familiar with the plot of Dracula from book and movies, a novice to the story could easily follow the action. It was as if one was transported back to the era of silent film, with the typical overacting of the age replaced by beautiful physical movements and gestures. I cannot express my delight and amazement at the dancers’ strength and the stage presence of every one of the performers.

The cast delivered the story in an enthralling, sensual, and athletic package. The three acts flew by quickly, and I was startled when it ended as I wanted more.

It doesn’t seem fair to call out any one performance, as roles are alternated over the four performances. Each cast member was artistically spot on. The choreography was solid and precise; one would think they had rehearsed it for years.

Lez Brotherson‘s set and costumes, courtesy of the Colorado ballet, coupled with David Grill’s lighting, were perfectly integrated with Mickael Pink’s direction and choreography, creating a visually stunning and immersive experience for the audience to savor.

The ONLY flaw, in my opinion, is the sad fact that there are only four performances. Do not miss the opportunity to sink your teeth into this Dracula

PBT’s ‘Dracula’ has three remaining performances at the Benedum Center on Saturday, February 11th at 2 pm & 7:30 pm along with Sunday, February 12, at 2pm. For tickets visit: https://www.pbt.org/performances/dracula/
