On March 11, 2023, at 7:30 pm, the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh (COP) will perform Igor Stravinsky‘s remarkable A Soldier’s Tale in Levy Hall of Rodef Shalom. The piece combines music, theater, dance, and actor/director Daina Griffith as the featured guest artist. This program also includes the Pittsburgh premiere of “Telephone,” by contemporary composer and University of Pittsburgh faculty member Amy Williams, and Darius Milhaud‘s The Creation of the World.

Daina Griffith has long been a presence on stage and screen in Pittsburgh with multiple credits at Pittsburgh Public Theater, Pittsburgh City Theatre, Quantum, and PICT, and she was named The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s “Performer of the Year” in 2014. Griffith will direct the theatrical component of A Soldier’s Tale and perform the role of Narrator. Of her upcoming performance, Griffith says, “The Soldier’s Tale encompasses everything I love about what we, as artists, are capable of. I find this project particularly exciting because of the ways the musicians, dancers, and actors can express themselves using these given forms. To work on a piece that uses all forms so beautifully is such a gift.”
“A Soldier’s Tale gives us an opportunity to expand our artistic profile and to enter the space where three performing arts intersect,” says Artistic Director and Conductor Edward Leonard. “It will be a privilege to work with Daina in order to present a work rarely seen in its intended form of live music, theater, and dance.”
Additional performers will be Dan Mayhak as the Soldier, Julianna Weis-Palacios as the Devil, and dance soloist and choreographer Alyssa Alford.
