The Heavy Gait of Night is a brand-new play by SCSC Founder and Artistic Director Jeffrey Chips about grief, passion, and family, filled with humor and love and finding inspiration from those we love the most.
The year is 1596. Will “Shaggy” Shakespeare is a player and shareholder in Lord Chamberlain’s Men and is quickly becoming one of the most popular playwrights in London. He’s just opened the smash hit A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and now Queen Elizabeth has requested he pens a new history of King John featuring resident clown Will Kempe as Robin Hood. Will struggles to complete this tall order, writing in the wings during performances, when he receives news from his family that changes his life – his son, Hamnet, has died.
Catherine Baird directs the Heavy Gait of Night with Bob Colbert as Will Shakespeare, Hannah Moss as Richard Burbage and Anne Hathaway Shakespeare, Ella Mizera as Alexander Cooke and Hamnet Shakespeare, Dionysius Westbrooks as Philip Henslowe, and Tom Sarp as John Shakespeare and Will Kempe.
The Heavy Gait of Night is presented as a script-in-hand workshop production Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, at 7:00 pm at the West View Hub – 435 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. Admission is free. This play contains a discussion of a child’s sudden death and adult language.
