Pittsburgh Playwrights Continues Premiere Roll With ‘Pyramid Builders’

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company continues its 20th anniversary season with its second premiere in a row. Next up at the newly anointed Madison Arts Center in the Hill District is Pyramid Builders, a work by Karuna Das – sanskrit for “servant of compassion” and “the pen and spirit name” of Kyle Bostian.

As writer Karuna Das, according to his website, his work represents “Literature Flavored by Mysticism.”

Directed by Bianca LaVerne Jones, Pyramid Builders opens Friday, April 14, with themes as far-ranging as ancient myths and modern agriculture, white supremacy and the climate crisis.

The story, set in the summer of 2012, is described as

“A chance encounter with homeless teenager Maya propels corporate executive Farrah on a journey into the depths of her soul. For them to help each other heal from parallel childhood traumas, the older woman will need to recognize what lies beneath her compulsion to rescue the youth.

“Twenty-four years later, in the midst of a civil war and food and water shortages, orphaned teenager Satya reluctantly takes refuge with Black Lives activist Octavia and her ally Cassie. As white nationalists close in, can the women build bridges that will lead to freedom?”

The cast of Pyramid Builders features Patrick Conner, Karla Payne, Elexa Hanner, David Ogrodowski, Cynthia Caul and Brenden Peifer

Bostian is a Pittsburgh-based theater artist, dramaturg, activist and educator, and former faculty member at Point Park University. With a specialty in new-play development, he was dramaturg for Savior Samuel, a play by PPTC founder and leader Mark Clayton Southers.

Pyramid Builders” runs April 14-30 at Madison Arts Center, 3401 Milwaukee St. Tickets and info: https://www.pghplaywrights.org/pyramid/
