Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater Company settles into its Madison Arts Center home this year, starting in April with the biomusical Dinah and the return to the August Wilson House backyard stage, with Radio Golf.
The season, with no specific dates at the time of the announcement, includes an original work by City Theatre co-artistic director Monteze Freeland, longtime Playwrights colleague of producing artistic director Mark Clayton Southers, and the Theatre Festival in Black and White, eight one-act plays by local playwrights in two programs, slated for October 2024.
The company first produced the Ernest McCarty show about 1950s singer Dina Washington in 2015, then as now with Pittsburgh’s own Delana Flowers as the Queen of the Blues, set during the last year of Dinah’s short and tragic life.

In June, Freeland debuts Fishy Woo Woo, described as “a comedy highlighting friendship, chosen family and a little revenge when the facts stop adding up.
Radio Golf, last visited by Playwrights in 2013, is the story of real estate developer Harmond Wilks, who is determined to become the first Black mayor of Pittsburgh, while on a mission to revive his blighted childhood neighborhood. As Wilks confronts characters from the past, he is forced to question how pursuing change could put his neighborhood’s history at risk.
