Pittsburgh Dance Council Unveils 2024-24 Season

The Pittsburgh Dance Council’s 2024-25 season, in its 54th year, features a roster of global award-winning, contemporary dance companies.

Announced on Monday, the season includes the return of Dado Masilo (South Africa), Malpaso Dance Company (Cuba), BODYTRAFFIC (United States), Twyla Tharp (United States/North America) and Malandain Ballet Biarritz (France), as well as the local premiere of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (Republic of China).

The Pittsburgh Dance Council, an arm of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, also presents the return of Ballet Folklórico de México (Mexico) as a season special.

Hamlet I Dada Masilo (South Africa) I Byham Theater I October 23, 2024 I Recommended for age 12+

Dada Masilo, a dancer and choreographer who reinvents classic stories so they speak to Black identity and feminism, sets Hamlet in urban South Africa and adds dark humor, elegance and a contemporary take on themes of the play. 

13 Tongues I Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (Republic of China) I November 16, 2024 I Byham Theater

Cloud Gate combines practices in Qi Gong, martial arts, modern dance, street dance and ballet to transform ancient aesthetics into a celebration of motion. 13 Tongues is a work based on Bangka/Wanhua, the oldest district of Taipei, and 1960s street artist “Thirteen Tongues.”

Mixed Repertory I Malpaso Dance Company (Cuba)

An associate company of Joyce Theater Productions, Malpaso has co-commissioned original works from several prominent international choreographers, including Aszure Barton, Sonya Tayeh and Ronald K. Brown. 

Mixed Repertory I BODYTRAFFIC (United States) I February 22, 2025  I Byham Theater

Led by Artistic Director Tina Finkelman Berkett and based out of Los Angeles, BODYTRAFFIC bursts with cutting-edge “vivid theatricality.” Says the San Francisco Chronicle, “They’re the kind of people you could watch dance anything all night.”

Diamond Jubilee – 60th Anniversary Program I Twyla Tharp Dance (United States) I April 19, 2025 I Byham Theater

 Twyla Tharp Dance celebrates her 60th anniversary with a coast-to-coast tour featuring her Olivier-nominated Diabelli Variations, set to Beethoven’s masterpiece of the same name, and a new dance to a reimagining of Philip Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia, arranged by Grammy Award-winning group Third Coast Percussion. 

Les Saisons (Four Seasons) I Malandain Ballet Biarritz (France) I May 7, 2025 I Byham Theater I Contains partial nudity

Composed of 22 dancers, and led by Thierry Malandain, the company is known for power, virtuosity, humanity and sensuality. In Malandain’s latest work, he combines Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and The Four Seasons composed by Giovanni Antonio Guido in a bold and innovative program.

Founder Amalia Hernández’s artistic legacy remains strong thanks to over 100 original choreographies with pristine technical skill, elaborate costumes and first-rate artists.
