Two productions that originated on Pittsburgh stages in the past year are headed to the International Black Theatre Festival this summer.
Headed to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the 18th biennial festival are Mark Clayton Southers‘ The Bluegrass Mile, which debuted at his Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company in October 2023, and the biomusical Blues Is the Roots: The Willie Dixon Story, a February 2024 production of the New Horizon Theater, Inc., written by Charles Dumas.
The International Black Theatre Festival, a program of North Carolina Black Rep, runs July 29-August 3, 2024, and features a selection of 120 new works, world premieres and Black classics, performed over six days by national and international professional Black theater companies at venues throughout Winston-Salem.
