Texture Contemporary Ballet presents Fragments of Time, September 20-22, on Pittsburgh’s Northside at the New Hazlett Theater. This program features one new work and one past work by Texture’s Artistic Director/Resident Choreographer, Alan Obuzor.
“I love that for each of our shows, we are able to present something new,” says Obuzor. “This is interesting and exciting not only for our audiences but also for our artists; this enables endless exploration and creativity.”
Fragments of Time will mark the debut of Texture’s newest Resident Dancer, Madison Jayne Cole. Madison’s background includes dancing and training with Central Illinois Ballet, New York State Ballet, Central Ballet in London, SLK Ballet NYC, Dutch National Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, and Ellison Ballet Professional Training Program. Madison was a guest artist with Texture in the spring of 2023, then again, most recently in March. This fall, she joined Texture full-time as a Resident Dancer.
This program will feature Artistic Director Obuzor’s 2016 work, Un-Preservation of Humanism. This work is set to the stirring and emotional music of Ezio Bosso. In this piece, the dancers are on pointe while melding together movement that is grounded, visceral, and human. This piece abstractly looks at humans, human conflict, and how some groups of people have treated, ‘othered,’ and subjugated their fellow humans throughout our existence as a species. Throughout history, humans have struggled with a lack or loss of compassion, enabling them to dehumanize others; Un-Preservation of Humanism explores what this can look like.
The program will also showcase Alan’s newest work, What is a Life? which explores concepts of the universe and an individual’s place in it. Obuzor has jumped into a new avenue of creativity by writing a spoken word poem featured in this new piece. The rest of the soundscape for this piece features other spoken word poems and music by artists such as Old Sea Brigade and Gregory Alan Isakov.
