City Theatre Conjures New Halloween Experience: ‘Ghosted’

City Theatre ventures into spooky season this week, with the original Halloween storytelling event Ghosted: Tales from Carson Street, an immersive experience throughout the company’s South Side campus.

Co-artistic directors Clare Drobot and Monteze Freeland have created tales to go with live music, libations and Halloween treats for the inaugural Ghosted, opening October 24, 2024.

WYEP’s Brian Siewiorek acts as both DJ and emcee for Ghosted, with storytellers Farooq Al-Said and Shannon Williams, along with music by Sarah Siplak and Shane McLaughlin. The event is designed by Emma Cummings, Alexx Jacobs, Madison Michalk, Tyler Hieb and Tyler Parsonage, with Lauren Connolly serving as stage manager.

“Ghosted is actually a great example of looking towards the next 50 years,” Drobot said during a conversation about the first 50, being celebrated this year at City Theatre. “It’s really an experiment. I think, as we were looking ahead, you see a shift in audiences who maybe don’t want to sit in the same location with their cell phone turned off, in a dark theater. So this is an introduction, and, I would say, it’s theater adjacent – it’s really a storytelling event.”

Ghosted is what emerged as City’s creative team discussed audience-building in a way that celebrated the return to shared experiences, after the pandemic shutdown, and also welcoming, with something both familiar and new.

“Halloween is iconic, particularly in a town like Pittsburgh, where echoes of the past bleed into the future,” said director and co-author Freeland. “This season, we’re shining a spotlight on some eerie tales from the vibrant lore of Carson Street. Ghosted isn’t a play – it’s an immersive experience. City Theatre is embarking on this thrilling new journey, attracting those who enjoy spine-tinging encounters, delightful drinks, and old-fashioned ghostly narratives, backed by a killer soundtrack.”
