Broadway’s Daniel Jenkins, Tasha Lawrence to Star in Pittsburgh Public’s ‘Virginia Woolf’

Tony nominee Daniel Jenkins and Tasha Lawrence will star and spar as George and Martha in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

The veteran Broadway actors will be joined by Pittsburgh-based Dylan Marquis Meyers and Claire Sabatine as Nick and Honey, the younger couple who accept an invitation and wind up as witnesses to the chaos of George and Martha’s marriage.

Pamela Berlin, who directed the original production of Steel Magnolias before its Broadway debut, returns to The Public for her 12th show.

“Many of my most satisfying and gratifying directing experiences have been at Pittsburgh Public Theater, and I have always wanted to direct Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, so this adventure is one I am especially looking forward to directing here,” Berlin said in a statement. “It’s a play that has fascinated and galvanized audiences whenever and wherever it has been produced. I am so glad that Pittsburgh will have the opportunity to experience it, too.”

The Edward Albee classic play, opening March 19 at the O’Reilly Theater, was picked  as the replacement for SCOTLAND, PA on the 2024-25 schedule, when the new musical was postponed.

A fourth revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?  was due to open on Broadway on March 11, 2020, but never officially opened due to the worldwide pandemic shutdown. The 1962 original won five Tony Awards, including best play. The Public has produced the drama twice before, in 1999 and 1982.

Jenkins was nominated for a 1985 Tony as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Big River. His Broadway credits include Oslo, Golden Boy, Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Wrong Mountain, Big (Drama Desk nomination) and Angels in America. He appeared as E. Howard “Big Ears” Hunt in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.

Lawrence most recently understudied Jessica Lange in Paula Vogel’s Mother Play on Broadway, and has been seen on screen in series including HBO’s High Maintenance and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
