The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh invites audiences to experience A Choral Celebration of Black History Month, an extraordinary tribute to the enduring contributions of Black composers to the world of choral music.
The concert features works by Adolphus Hailstork (Nocturne, Shout for Joy), Duke Ellington (Come Sunday), and Pittsburgh’s own Billy Strayhorn (Satin Doll), alongside pieces by Margaret Bonds, R. Nathaniel Dett and others. It also includes the live premiere of Shout Joy, a stirring work by Artistic Director Thomas W. Douglas, set to the poem of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle.
The concert blends sacred themes, jazz influences, and poetry, highlighting Black artistry’s depth, beauty, and enduring impact in choral music.
“This concert is a celebration, an education, and a call to honor the incredible legacy of Black composers whose work has shaped choral music as we know it,” said Douglas. “Through this performance, we aim to inspire reflection, joy, and connection across communities.”
Eastminster Presbyterian Church, located in Pittsburgh’s vibrant East Liberty neighborhood, provides the perfect setting for this event, with its historic architecture and commitment to community engagement.
