The Pittsburgh Savoyards concludes its 87th season with H.M.S. Pinafore, the operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, running March 14th to 23rd at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall in Carnegie. Under the stage direction of Melissa Grande and the musical direction of Guy Russo, the production delivers an evening of humor, romance, and unforgettable melodies.
A satirical take on class distinctions and British naval tradition, H.M.S. Pinafore; or, the Lass Who Loved a Sailor, revolves around the captain’s daughter, Josephine, who is in love with a lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, despite being promised to Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. The narrative explores themes of social class and true love as Josephine and Ralph’s affection faces numerous obstacles. With a twist of mistaken identity and a satirical look at British society, the topsy-turvy conclusion resolves in a satisfying way while also highlighting the absurdities of the class system.
Full of witty dialogue, spirited music, and charming absurdity, this operetta remains a favorite for audiences of all ages.
H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert & Sullivan’s fourth composition as a duo and originally premiered on May 25, 1878. The opera was a smash success and ran for 571 performances, the second-longest run for any opera when it closed. It was so popular that it also became an international sensation, making Gilbert & Sullivan household names worldwide.
Director Melissa Grande brings a fresh vision to the classic tale. Longtime Pittsburgh Savoyards music director Guy Russo leads the orchestra in delivering the operetta’s iconic score, including favorites like “I’m Called Little Buttercup” and “He is an Englishman.”
