Pittsburgh Public Theater Moves to Three-Show Subscription Lineup for 2025-2026 Season

By SHARON EBERSON

Pittsburgh Public Theater has announced a three-show 2025-2026 subscription season, featuring a raucous comedy, an adapted classic and a Pulitzer Prize-winner, plus the annual holiday “season special,” A Christmas Story: The Play, which comes with a discount as a fourth show for subscribers.

The Public is in the midst of finding a successor to artistic director Marya Sea Kaminski, who is exiting in July after seven years at the helm. She will return in 2026, to direct the Tony Award-nominated adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People.

The current season, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s 50th, features five shows, in addition to A Christmas Story. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is onstage now, with the large-scale Public Works’ Twelfth Night, directed by Kaminski, still to come.

A statement for onStage Pittsburgh, about the company’s 51st season lineup, echoes what is said to subscribers on the Public’s website:

“We are dedicated to both artistic excellence and sustainability as an organization – as part of this commitment, we are welcoming four shows to our mainstage season. Our 2025-2026 season will be further enriched by partner productions, education events and special programming, to be announced at a later date and throughout the year.”

The Public’s 2025-2026 season at the O’Reilly Theater opens October 1, with the theatrical farce Noises Off, directed by Margot Bordelon.

“I can’t wait to bring the joyful chaos of Noises Off to Pittsburgh audiences. This is a love letter to the magic – and mayhem – of live theater,” Bordelon, a New York-based director, said via a Public press release.

The company previously produced Noises Off in 2014.

Amy Herzog’s acclaimed adaptation of An Enemy of The People, which starred Tony Award-winner and Succession actor Jeremy Strong on Broadway, arrives at the O’Reilly in February 2026.

“This adaptation is razor-sharp, urgent, and deeply compelling. Ibsen’s story is more relevant than ever, and I’m honored to bring it to Pittsburgh at this moment,” Kaminski said.

The season closes with Primary Trust, the Pittsburgh premiere of the winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play by Eboni Booth will be directed by the very busy Kyle Haden, the senior associate head of drama at Carnegie Mellon University and associate professor of acting. He previously directed the Public’s revival of The Chief in 2021, and has recent credits with City Theatre and an upcoming project with Quantum Theatre.

Primary Trust is billed as, “Booth’s masterpiece, weaving a tale of a lovable loner who confronts his demons, only to discover angels around every corner.”

Haden said the play “is a beautiful, intimate story about the power of kindness and community. I’m delighted to bring this award-winning work to The Public, especially in a city that values both so deeply.”
