‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ Under Way at Pittsburgh Public Theater

Nick: You’re all crazy: nuts.
Martha: Awww, ’tis the refuge we take when the unreality of the world weighs too heavy on our tiny heads. … Relax; sink into it; you’re no better than anybody else.

Pittsburgh Public Theater has unleashed the classic Edward Albee verbal battle royale, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, this week, with the official opening Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the O’Reilly Theater

Broadway veterans Tasha Lawrence and Daniel Jenkins star as Martha and George, a married couple fueled by alcohol and resentments, ready to pounce at any moment with a verbal swipe.

The play begins with the combatants returning home from a party, having invited Honey and Nick (Claire Sabatine and Dylan Marquis Meyers) to join them for a nightcap. The evening descends into a chaotic scene, with Martha and George intent on drawing the younger couple into their web of emotional gamesmanship.

The Tony Award-winning play of 1963 was revived three times on Broadway before a planned fourth was lost to the pandemic in 2020. This latest Pittsburgh Public production is the third in its history (previously 1999 and 1982), and the 12th show directed by Pamela Berlin for the company.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was added to the Public’s 2024-2025 lineup when the musical SCOTLAND, PA had to be dropped, due the loss of financial backing from an outside producer.
