August Wilson in April: Annual New Voices Competition and Birthday Block Party

The annual Pittsburgh Regional August Wilson New Voices Monologue Competition, presented by the Bill Nunn Theatre Outreach Project, takes place Monday, March 31, 2025, at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.

Co-sponsored by August Wilson House, the event celebrates the legacy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, by empowering high school students to bring Wilson’s characters to life. The event highlights the 10 works that make up Wilson’s American Century Cycle, “his lasting impact on American theater and his commitment to authentic Black narratives.”

The 7 p.m. event, which includes refreshments, is free, but requires registration at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pittsburgh-regional-august-wilson-new-voices-monologue-competition-tickets-1295181756499.  The Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild is located at 1815 Metropolitan Street, Pittsburgh, 15233. Visit https://www.billnunntop.com/ for details.

The New Voices Competition comes as the August Wilson House is gearing up for the annual Birthday Celebration Block Party on Saturday, April 26, one day shy of of the late playwright’s 80th birthday. He died at age 60, in 2005.

The Hill District celebration will include more than 150 craft vendors, food trucks, music and dance performances, kids’ zone activities, a mac and cheese contest, tours of the House, and more. Born on April 27, 1945, Wilson was raised in the rear of 1727 Bedford Avenue, which has been restored as a community arts center.

The family-oriented block party runs along Bedford Avenue and parts of Hillside Drive and Roberts Street in the Lower Hill, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more at https://www.augustwilsonbirthdaycelebration.com/.
