With news on the Actors’ Equity Contract Possible Strike and a Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Free Concert

A shorter than usual Call Board this week. As many of you know Sharon has been busy producing the 25th anniversary edition of Off the Record which premiered last evening. She is taking a much deserved break for the next couple of days.

UPDATE on the Actor’s Equity Contract with the Broadway League

There is a lot of chatter on various social media sites regarding a possible strike by Broadway performers. Here is what we have learned:

Broadway actors, represented by Actors’ Equity Association, and Broadway musicians, represented by the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802, have each authorized strike action as contract negotiations with The Broadway League have stalled.

Reuters’ reporting suggests that 32 productions on Broadway represented by the Broadway League contracts could be affected if a strike is enforced.

If a strike is called, standard on Broadway productions under the Equity “Production Contract” would be halted.  However, not all shows are under the standard Broadway contract; Off-Broadway and non-profit companies in NYC, such as Roundabout Lincoln Center, are examples.

Some touring shows currently playing on Broadway, Mamma Mia! and Beetlejuice, use different contracts (though with nuances about the musicians’ contract during their NYC run).

Different Equity agreements govern several of our local companies: LORT (League of Regional Theaters) for the Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Public Theater, and City Theatre, with Quantum Theatre covered by an Equity Small Professional Theatre (SPT) agreement.

Most touring productions, such as the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series, are covered by a new Equity Touring Agreement that provides a clear structure through 2026. A complete elimination or collapse of Equity national tours is not imminent.
