‘END OF AN ERA’: PITTSBURGH CITY PAPER SHUT DOWN

Final issue of Pittsburgh City Paper

The city’s alternative weekly tabloid for more than three decades, Pittsburgh City Paper was acquired by Block Communications Inc. (BCI), the company that owns the Post-Gazette, in early 2023. In October of 2025, BCI moved the weekly to quarterly and online. Then, on New Year’s Eve, it was shut down with no advance notice. “This difficult decision is a result of the economic realities facing news organizations, not a reflection of the quality of the journalism or the dedication of the City Paper’s staff,” BCI said in a statement. News editor Colin Williams said, “It was the end of an era.” The arts and culture community will certainly miss City Paper’s voice and dedication to coverage of live events. RIP.
