MONDAY TRIPLE PLAY: OPERA FASHION SHOW, NEW BROADWAY SERIES, CSA OFF THE PAGE
My heart will be split three ways on Monday, March 23, when I will be at the Pittsburgh Opera “It’s About Time” Fashion Show, a fresh take on period dress that combines couture and opera, in what I anticipate will be a dazzling runway presentation, because it is curated by Richard Parsakian. The fashion extravaganza, one of several opportunities for fans to wish outgoing General Director Christopher Hahn a fond farewell, is at the Pittsburgh Opera’s Strip District home, 2425 Liberty Ave., the Strip District.
At the same time, at the Greer Cabaret, Downtown, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will be announcing the 2026-2027 PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh season. Have you been following the clues on their social media accounts? I have my thoughts. Will there be a happy ending? Maybe? We’ll find out the on the 23rd.
Also that evening, at the New Hazlett Theater on the North Side, the CSA Off the Page series will present a staged reading The Sound of Silence: Cosmic Microwave Background, a work by Julia Fraser, directed by Daina Griffith (currently wowing City Theatre audiences in Eureka Day). How I wish I could be in three places at once! Julia and I were in a Tammy Ryan playwriting workshop together, which is also where I met Brian Knavish, and where I first heard his laugh-out-loud comedy, There’s a Leprechaun Now? I have seen Brian’s work was given a second production (after R-ACT Theatre in Rochester, PA), this time at the Greer, on a snowy night in Pittsburgh. Any proximity to St. Patrick’s Day was purely intentional to the play, which was a fundraiser for Throughline Theater Company. There’s a Leprechaun Now? is a very funny satire about the extremes parents will go to for a kindergarten project, no matter how ridiculous the teacher’s demands are. It’s been so much fun to watch it’s development from page to stage to stage, and who knows where it may land next.

Second City: Laugh Harder, Not Smarter is a celebration of American comedy 65 years in the making. The return of the Second City Touring Company to Pittsburgh, but for the first time at City Theatre, features “innovative and interactive performance” in the form of the classic sketch comedy and songs from the company’s rich history, as well as the signature brand of irreverent improv that The Second City is famous for.

Westmoreland Performing Arts’ Jesus Christ Superstar, a staple of the Easter season, is a family affair.
