Sure signs that a new season is nearly upon us include a hint of crisp air, the swirl of fallen leaves, stores stocked with Halloween decorations, and the return of Vigilance Theater Group’s Campfire Stories.
The immersive company’s return to woodsy Camp Guyasuta invites wanderers to “experience ghost stories, s’mores, and interdimensional beings like they were meant to, around a fire.”
“Gathering around the campfire when autumn arrives feels perfect for Vigilance,” says Sean Collier, Vigilance Creative Director. “We try to operate at the intersection of fun and spooky as much as possible, and hearing some unsettling tales and creepy lore while the trees seem to close in around you sits right at that intersection.”
In 2026, the show directed by Tal Kroser focuses on folkloric creatures, or cryptids, “particularly those with ties to this part of the country,” Collier said. “Instead of the grab bag of scary stories we’ve presented in the past, we’re taking a close look at the Mothman, the Squonk, the Wampus Cat and an original cryptid creation.”
And who knows? Jimothy the Round Raccoon of the Northwest might make an appearance …
The experience is not only about the scary surprises one expects of Vigilance, whose most recent work was the original Closing Time at the Moonside Cafe, which enjoyed a sold-out run at the Three Stories building, Downtown.
“It’s like a trip to camp, with all the comfort of going home at the end of the night,” Collier says of Campfire Stories. “We have crafts, s’mores, unexpected performances and scary surprises. We try to pack a lot of atmosphere and fun into a short show.”
