Return of City Theatre’s Momentum Festival Will Feature Joe Grushecky Musical, CMU Collaboration

City Theatre is partnering with Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for  New Work Development to bring back the Momentum Festival, a public reading series and laboratory for  playwrights to workshop new scripts with directors, dramaturgs and actors. 

Presentations of four works in different stages of development and a“new works slam!” celebrating local playwrights will take place December 13 and 14, 2025 at venues on City Theatre’s South Side campus and Downtown. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. 

Momentum will feature a Mainstage presentation of “East Carson Street,” a musical by Joe Grushecky, including two songs co-written with Bruce Springsteen.

Pittsburgh Musical Theater Enters First Phase of Multimillion Dollar Transformation

The transformation of Pittsburgh Musical Theater got off to a smashing start – a wall-breaking ceremony on July 9, with Mayor Ed Gainey and County Executive Sara Innamorato striking the blows for change. The ceremony offered a view of the façade at the corner of Sanctus and South Main Streets, where a window to the two-story lobby will replace brick and mortar. Inside, renovations were already well underway.

The $8 million first phase of an ongoing $20 million campaign will add the building’s first elevator, allowing accessibility to all levels of a facility that includes the Gargaro Theater and the PMT Conservatory, for students ages 4-18.

Richard King Mellon Foundation Provides $10 Million Grant to Fund and Sustain Arts Landing

A $10 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation – “among the largest philanthropic gifts to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in its four-decade-history” – has helped the nonprofit arts organization to complete funding to cover construction costs of Arts Landing. Additionally, the grant will support ongoing operations, programming, maintenance, and security for the 4-acre civic space once it opens to the public in 2026.
