MTAP Presents New Musical ABDUCTION October 29 to 31

Musical Theatre Artists of Pittsburgh (MTAP) has announced the rescheduling of the pandemic-delayed Incubator Workshop production of Abduction, a new musical with local roots, running October 29 to 31 for three free public performances at Carnegie Stage.

With a book by T.J. Pieffer, lyrics by Becki Toth and T.J. Pieffer, and music by Becki Toth and Brad KempAbduction tells the story of high school senior and student body president Pippa Peterson whose social footing crumbles after she witnesses an alien abduction in her tiny hometown of Pluto, Pennsylvania. A wave of misinformation leads her neighbors to hypothesize in strange and alarming ways, making Pippa seem weird and unreliable at best. Pippa must convince everyone who’s been abducted along with her of the grave danger they’re truly in, all while coming to terms with her cozy hometown’s many flaws. Can the good folks of Pluto escape the clutches of hungry, flesh eating aliens in time for this year’s Corn Fest?

The Pittsburgh theatre community’s rising star Marnie Quick (Front Porch Theatricals, Pittsburgh CLO), who was seen in MTAP’s 2019 Hot Metal Musicals, will play the fierce heroine Pippa. Joining her as Pippa’s right-hand man Theo is Anthony Marino (Billy ElliotA Secret Garden at Stage Right!), and Myah Davis (Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Musical Theater, Robert Morris Colonial Theater) plays Quinn, a charismatically dark outcast who eventually proves essential to Pippa’s journey of self-discovery. Mandie Patsy, a veteran of national (The Producers) and international (My Fair Lady) touring companies, will play Lydia, Pippa’s helicopter mother. Also featured in the cast are Abduction‘s bookwriter T.J. Pieffer, playing the wannabe dancer Father

Pittsburgh director Stephen Santa (Jumping Jack Theater, Pittsburgh Musical Theater), who previously directed two of MTAP’s Incubator Readings, will direct the workshop production. Music direction will be in the hands of Nick Navari, whose new musical, Local Singles, was part of the New Hazlett’s 2021 CSA program and filmed for public presentation. This Incubator Workshop is produced by MTAP’s Executive Director Jeanne Drennan and co-produced by Stephen Santa.

Abduction has been previously developed at Columbia College (Chicago) in 2018 and as a reading in the New York Musical Festival in 2019.
