Pittsburgh New Works Festival – Week Two Opens August 29th

Local companies produce world premieres of one-act plays during Program B.

The three world premieres are set in a snowbound cabin, at the aftermath of a royal ball, and in a kindergarten. The Pittsburgh New Works Festival partners with local theater companies to present Program B during the second weekend of its 33rd season, August 29th- September 1st, in the Genesius Theater at Duquesne University.

Program B opens with two people trapped in a cabin as a blizzard grows ever fiercer, in Storm of the Century, by Joe Carlisle of Croton on Hudson, N.Y., produced by the Pittsburgh Savoyards. Sean Lenhart directs Sean David Butler, Jim Kiley, and Erika Krenn.

In Once Upon a Human, by Amy Tofte of Los Angeles, Prince Charming finds himself confronted by hostile woodland creatures after the Ball. Matt Dudley directs for the Red Masquers. The cast includes Travis Barkefelt, Tyler Guinto-Brody, Piper Redford, and Anna King Skeels.

Finally, kids vie to be kindergarten valedictorian in Kindergrad, by Deanna Sparrow of Slippery Rock, Pa., produced by The Heritage Players. Nicole Zalak directs Carly Chotiner, Frederick Coleman, Dewayne Curry, Kalee George, Korey Grecek, Amanda Leight, Eric Thomas, and Sydney Turnwald.

The season runs on weekends through September 22nd, with performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Three new one-act plays are presented in each of the five-weekend programs.

The plays were selected from more than 300 submitted anonymously earlier this year. Each submitted play was evaluated, and the companies chose the 15 to be produced from among the highest scorers. The playwrights of the plays being presented are from states coast to coast, and one is from a playwright in Mexico.
