Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre will Present a One-Night-Only Preview Performance of ‘Andy Warhol’s Tomato’ at the Warhol Museum on September 13th

Following the preview, the production will play at Carnegie Stage from September 20th through October 6th, 2024.

The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre (PICT) are partnering for a special one-evening presentation of Vince Melocchi‘s play Andy Warhol’s Tomato, directed by Elizabeth Elias Huffman, PICT’s Artistic Director. Playwright Melocchi was born and raised in McKeesport and currently writes and acts in theatre, film, and TV.

Set in Pittsburgh, in 1946, a rebellious art student at Carnegie Tech, 18-year-old Andy Warhol, unexpectedly finds himself in the basement of a working-class bar owned by Mario “Bones” Bonino, a second-generation Italian American from McKeesport. Throughout the summer, Andy and Bones form an unlikely friendship that surprises them both. This refreshing path to mutual respect foments a sense of humanity tinted with construct inspiration.

Enjoying critically acclaimed productions in Los Angeles and Chicago, the play examines the complexities between urban-LGBTQ lifestyle and blue-collar sensibilities, reinforcing our aspirations that divisions can be bridged by our fundamental need to create. As Bones says in the play: “There is beauty in the mundane.”

Matt Henderson (Andy Warhol), returns to PICT after appearing in their productions of The Old Curiosity Shop, Romeo & Juliet, and The Lion in Winter. His most recent roles were in Angels in America with Elsewhere Theatre Company and in Witness for The Prosecution at Prime Stage. He has appeared in many theatre productions in Pittsburgh as well as film and TV.

Johnny Patalano (Mario Bonino) made his Pittsburgh theater debut more than twenty years ago as Tony in Tony ‘N Tina’s Wedding in Station Square. He has worked with many companies in Pittsburgh and is excited to be making his PICT debut with Andy Warhol’s Tomato.

PICT’s Artistic Director, Elizabeth Elias Huffman, will make her inaugural full-production directorial debut for the company’s production of Andy Warhol’s Tomato. The play marks PICT’s return to the stage after a restructuring pause and a new partnership as a theater in residence with Carnegie Stage.

This single performance of Andy Warhol’s Tomato at The Warhol Theater will be on Friday, September 13th, 2024, at 8:00 PM. “I’m glad we could partner with PICT on a one-evening preview performance of this play, that reflects on Warhol’s evolution as a student artist at Carnegie Tech,” said Ben Harrison, senior director of performing arts and programming at The Warhol.

Following the preview, Andy Warhol’s Tomato will play at Carnegie Stage from September 20th through October 6th, 2024.
