Annual Pittsburgh Symphony Gala Raises Over $1 Million to Support Education and Community Programs

This past Saturday, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra held its annual Opening Night Gala, led by Music Director Manfred Honeck, with guest artist Yuja Wang performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The sold-out gala, which raised more than $1 million, also featured performances by PSO Concertmasters David McCarroll and Justine Campagna.

“We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary generosity shown at this year’s gala,” said president and CEO Melia Tourangeau. “Raising over one million dollars in a single evening reflects the incredible commitment of our community to music and education. These funds allow the Pittsburgh Symphony to open doors for thousands of young people through our free Schooltime concerts and other Learning & Engagement programs that bring the transformative experience of great music into lives across the region.”

The gala is the PSO’s largest annual fundraising event, with proceeds directly supporting the orchestra’s Learning & Engagement programs. Last season alone, Schooltime reached more than 22,000 students and teachers.

GPAC Launches ‘Building Artist Equity Through Advocacy’

Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council is asking for your input into the upcoming campaign, “Building Artist Equity Through Advocacy.”

GPAC leader Patrick Fisher wrote in the council’s newsletter and blog, “I participated in the Center for Artistic Activism’s Innovation for Impact Leadership Intensive, a training that equips artists and advocates to turn creativity into action. With C4AA’s guidance, the Arts Council is preparing to launch an advocacy campaign focused on a critical local issue: artist equity,” Fisher wrote. “Too often, artists are asked to provide unpaid labor through competitive calls or proposals, with little more than the promise of exposure. While we’ve taken a clear stance against these practices, we believe we can do more.”

The campaign aims to “uplift compensation standards set by Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) and to partner with arts organizations in understanding the internal barriers that may prevent them from adopting and upholding these practices.”
