The Pittsburgh Savoyards Present Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Utopia, Limited,’ Opening October 10th

Utopia, Limited, is one of the duo’s rarest and most ambitious operettas.

First performed in 1893, Utopia, Limited tells the story of a secluded island kingdom determined to transform itself by adopting the institutions, fashions, and foibles of Victorian England. The result is a sparkling satire of politics, monarchy, and the follies of modernization — delivered with Gilbert’s razor-sharp wit and Sullivan’s glorious score.

While operettas like H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance are household names, Utopia, Limited is a hidden gem — staged far less frequently but brimming with the same wit, musical brilliance, and biting social commentary.

This marks only the second time in the Pittsburgh Savoyards’ 88-year history that Utopia, Limited has been staged, making it a rare chance to experience this comic opera live. For this production, director Robert Hockenberry relocates the action from a South Seas island to the legendary city of Atlantis, adding a mythic and imaginative twist to the story’s satire. Music director Guy Russo leads the orchestra in bringing Sullivan’s radiant music to life.
