PITTSBURGH OPERA HEADS TO CAVALRY EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN SHADYSIDE FOR THE PITTSBURGH PREMIERE OF BENJAMIN BRITTON’S ‘CURFEW RIVER

Based on the Japanese Noh play Sumidagawa River. In Curlew River, a woman driven mad by the mystery of her lost son learns her boy’s unfortunate fate from a chance encounter with a Ferryman while crossing a river. These will be its first-ever performances in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Opera’s Resident Artist Matt Soibelman sings the role Abbot, Antony Walker conducts, and Dana Kinney directs.. All the roles in the parable are sung by men, following both the Japanese and English medieval performing traditions.

A PITTSBURGH STORY: THE CREATION OF FREEDOM HOUSE AMBULANCE SERVICE

Prime Stage Theatre presents Freedom House: Giving Life a Second Chance, a new play that dramatizes the 1967 creation of Freedom House Ambulance Service. By playwright L.E. McCullough, the play reveals the Hill District roots of America’s first mobile emergency medical unit, staffed by professionally-trained paramedics. Freedom House served as the foundational model for today’s paramedic profession and modern EMS departments around the world. 

Directed by Scott Calhoon, the cast includes Willa “Katy” Cotten, Cynthia Dallas, Justin Mohr, Darrin Mosley, Anne Rematt, DeVaughn Robinson and Ryan Warsing. Freedom House is at the home of Prime Stage, the New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square East, North Side, January 23-February 1, 2026.

‘THE CHIEF’ COMES TO THE PITTSBURGH PLAYHOUSE

The Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park University will present Phil Winters in The Chief, the one-man play about Steelers founder Art Rooney that was a sensation at Pittsburgh Public Theater, with Tom Atkins originating the role. The Chief, by Rob Zellers and Gene Collier, returned to the Public in 2021, with Winters in the role. At the Highmark Theatre at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, Downtown.

🎺 Con Alma, the live music club at 613 Penn Ave., Downtown, is holding a fundraising gala on Sunday, January 25, 5-9 p.m., with “live jazz, elevated cuisine, hand-crafted cocktails and community celebration,” including performances by trumpeter Sean Jones, performing with special guest musicians.
