You may have noticed her onstage when the Best Musical, or Best Play, or Best Revival of either has been awarded at the Tony Awards, her white hair shining amid the crowd. Jamie deRoy, a Pittsburgh native and Broadway producer with 15 Tonys, will receive an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from her alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University, at the May 10 commencement ceremony.

Last year, deRoy (CMU Class of ‘67) received the Bill Sensenbrenner Dream Maker Award, which “honors leaders in the business community who exhibit a passion for investing in the cultural capital of our youth and in promoting and support the performing arts.” Over the course of her career, deRoy has co-produced more than 160 Broadway and off-Broadway shows, including recent Tony-winners Merrily We Roll Along, Stereophonic and Leopoldstadt. Her credits on stage and screen include the TV documentaries Broadway: The Golden Age and its sequel, and, in 2025, she marked 35 years of her Telly Award-winning variety show Jamie deRoy & Friends. In addition to her Tonys, she boasts numerous MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) Awards, and Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Drama League and Audience Choice Awards.

DeRoy, whose mother, Aaronel deRoy Gruber, was a multimedia artist, and whose father, Irving Gruber, was owner of American Forge and Manufacturing Co., began her career as a performer, including as the opener for Joan Rivers in New York and L.A.
