A Letter from the Editor,
Friends, we have finally staggered our way through the unforgiving winter, plagued with days of 20 hours of darkness and a massively disappointing awards shows. Yet, while the winter was mercurial and bleak, Pittsburgh in the Round has been as lively as ever! We made a galloping leap past the 1,000th Post (shout-out to Linda for being the 1,000th with her Dear Theatre Mom: Trials of Tech Week Post) ; we CELEBRATED OUR FIFTH BIRTHDAY (now we have to enroll PITR in a fancy Kindergarten theatre program); and we covered a bevy of amazing shows spanning throughout the Pittsburgh cosmos.
My transition into the role of Editor-in-Chief of PITR has been a tremendously satisfying and rewarding one, and I look forward to strengthening the extant relationships with the myriad companies and artists and embarking on new relationships and endeavors in these ensuing months.
Thanks as always for the support and wonderful theatre!
Now, go order your 2019 tickets!!
Regards,
Eva A. Phillips
What can you look forward to discovering in this year’s Spring Preview? Yvonne shares an in-depth interview with the extraordinarily talented Maria Sensi Sellner, founder and General and Artistic Director of Resonance Works | Pittsburgh, as she discusses her career as a premiere conductor and the forthcoming St. John’s Passion, opening March 22. Jade checked out the latest installment of 12 Peers Theatre’s Mythburgh and discussed the unconventional story telling series that will run through the Spring and Summer of 2019.
Love Musical of the Month and now you’re craving the scoop on the musicals you should be downright stoked for this Spring Season? George gives you his Five Must See Musicals for Spring 2019 (PLUS TWO!!!) ,so be sure to read up on exciting new musicals like Lincoln Park Performing Art Center’s adaptation of Singin’ in the Rain and Newsies! The Musical by the team at Pittsburgh Musical Theatre.
Don’t forget to read our conversation with PICT’s Alan Stanford and our coverage of PICT’s next enthralling production, The Heiress. And while we’re speaking of enthralling, be sure to read our talk-back with the creative team behind Quantum Theatre’s ambitious re-imagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear that will take place at the majestically gargantuan Carrie Furnace (May 11-Jun 2).
Our friends at Little Lake Theatre will be embarking on their 71st season this year, and Emily reported on the jam-packed season that will feature shows like Electra and Top Girls . It’s also a big year for Beth Corning, who will celebrate her 40th anniversary of being a “professional artists,” and her company CorningWorks, celebrating it’s 10th year of existence. In Spring 2019 Dance Preview, we cover CorningWorks upcoming production with a shadow of… (March 27th-31), Exhalations Dance Theatre’s fast-approaching Equinox (March 23 & 24th), and Attack Theatre’s forthcoming project Rube Goldberg Variations . You can cap off those previews by digging into Brian’s extensive piece on Stage 62’s Spring 2019 offerings while you’re at it!
And finally, what does Fun Home, Branden-Jacob Jenkins, The Theatre Factory, obnoxious solos by Rapunzel in Into the Woods, and a play ominously titled ‘night, Mother have in common? They’re all on Eva’s Countdown of 2019 that she’s most excited about–but in all honesty, she’s excited about every single show that’s hitting the stage this season.
